Theresa May’s election fever

UK Prime Minister Theresa May calls for election to hold on June 8. Credit:BBC

The UK Prime Minister has made a sharp U-turn from not wanting an election until 2020 to now wanting it to hold as soon as June 8. The PM announced rather unexpectedly his morning that the snap election is imperative for certainty, stability and strong leadership as the UK begins Brexit talks with the EU?
Giving her reasons for the change of mind, Mrs May said: “The country is coming together but Westminster is not.”
Meanwhile opposition parties are delighted with the announcement as it offers them a great chance to dethrone Mrs May early rather than wait till 2020. Jeremy Cobyn has welcomed the idea even though the polls puts his party chances at 25% as against the Conservative party which stands at 45%.
A vote is expected in the House of Commons on Wednesday, all indications shows that the House will back the snap election, although the House of Commons have been divided before now, it appears like all parties will vote in favour of the election giving Mrs May the two thirds majority she needs to have the authority to hold the election?

A Glasgow court has ruled that a woman whose dangerous driving took the life of a 73 year old pensioner and seriously injured three others would be spared prison time because spending tim in jail will cause her family hardship. Anna-Marie Strachan veered on to the wrong side of the A90 between Fraserburgh and Peterhead in Aberdeenshire on July 31, 2014.

Pensioner Mr Thomson, who was behind the wheel of the Passat, suffered serious injuries in the crash but died the following day. Mr Thomson’s wife Frances and two young children were also seriously hurt. On Wednesday at the High Court in Glasgow, judge Lady Stacey said she had thought “long and hard” about the case.

She noted Strachan was the mother of two young children and their main carer and a jail sentence could mean her husband losing his job and the family home. The judge said these factors were behind her decision not to hand Strachan a custodial sentence. Strachan was instead sentenced to 300 hours’ unpaid community work and banned from driving for eight years.

Describing the “quite serious effect” that losing his mother had on his personal and professional life, he tells how living in the public eye left him feeling he could be “very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions”.
The Prince, now 32, turned to counsellors and even took up boxing. He says he is now in “a good place”.
Prince Harry has decided to give an unprecedented insight into his past in the hope it will encourage people to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
He has spoken to Bryony Gordon for the first episode of her podcast, Mad World, in which she will interview high-profile guests about their mental health experiences.

The 30-minute conversation is one of the most candid insights into the innermost thoughts of a modern young member of the Royal family. The Prince, together with his brother and sister-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have set up Heads Together, a charity which promotes good mental well-being.
Prince Harry, who was 12 when his mother died, says in the podcast that he spent his teenage years and twenties determined not to think about her.
“I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12, and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years, has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but my work as well,” he said.
