For the first time in history, the world’s biggest ship has set a new record lifting a 24,000-tonne oil platform.

The Pioneering Spirit heaved the topside of the Brent Delta platform off its support legs on Friday.

The colossal structure will eventually be dismantled at a decommissioning yard in Teeside.

The Pioneering Spirit is the world’s largest ship and weighs in at more than 400,000 tonnes.

It was custom-built at a cost of around £2.2bn for the purpose of decommissioning oil platforms.

The Brent field is the first major decommissioning project in the North Sea, a sector which could be worth more than £17bn over the next decade.

Environmental groups have opposed Shell’s plans, however, saying the oil giant has not provided enough information.

More than 100 North Sea platforms will be completely or partially removed in the next ten years, with around 1800 wells scheduled to be plugged and 4600 miles of pipeline decommissioned.

The market was reportedly worth around £2bn in 2015.

The General Teaching Council of Scotland is investigating allegations that a head teacher threatened a parent and badly scolded a young student. Elizabeth Manley risks being struck off if the allegations are proven to be true.

Further allegations against the head teacher are that she encouraged a decline of the school’s ethics as well as as intimidating staff. It’s been reported that she screamed “if you are not going to work you can go home, we do not want children like you in this school” at a child.

The head teacher is also been accused of making a boy stand in front of his class and told his fellow students to vote on whether or not she should send him home or give him another chance.

Staff at the Aberdeenshire school have also complained that she is scary, intimidating and unapproachable. She allegedly called a parent at home and spoke to her in an “aggressive and threatening manner”. It is claimed that most of the incidents happened within the spate of 3 years.

84 year old Perth man defrauded of £1000 by phone scam

Police Scotland is investigating the phone scam

Police Scotland is investigating an incident of a telephone scam, whereby an 84 year old man was defrauded of £1000 in Perth this week.

The criminals contacted the victim by phone claiming to be from HMRC and convinced the man that if he did not purchase £1,000 worth of iTunes vouchers he would be arrested and his bank account frozen. The man purchased the vouchers and read the serial numbers over the telephone to the fraudsters.

We would ask retailers and shops to be vigilant regarding elderly persons purchasing large amounts of vouchers. Officers would like to remind members of the public, that fraudsters are extremely convincing in their approach, taking steps to engage with the victim and win their trust.

We urge people to be aware of calls and contact of this nature, and in particular to ensure their elderly or vulnerable family, friends and neighbours are also aware of this type of scam and to be on their guard.

Always be alert if you are contacted on the telephone by anyone claiming to be from your bank, or indeed any other company such as an electricity supplier, or other well-known organisation or business, in particular be suspicious and don’t disclose any information if the call involves transferring money, or if anyone asks you to provide or confirm your bank details. Reputable business or organisations would never request payment in the form of vouches.

If you have the slightest doubt, attend your bank in person. Do not provide your details over the telephone or the computer.

Further advice on online/telephone frauds and prevention can be found on Police Scotland website or by contacting your local authority Trading Standards department.

Heard of Child Tax Rape Clause?

Pic:Getty Images

Basically, Child Tax Credit is help from government to parents of children under 16 to go towards the cost of upbringing. This payment is however to be limited to two children per household with an exception for a child born as a result of “non-consensual conception”. This is the so-called ‘rape clause’.
It states that a woman can claim for a third or subsequent child if it was conceived “as a result of a sexual act which you didn’t or couldn’t consent to” or “at a time when you were in an abusive relationship, under ongoing control or coercion by the other parent of the child”.
A woman cannot claim this exemption if she lives with the other parent of the child.
However, it states she can qualify whether or not there has been a court case or conviction of a criminal offence.
Many people have criticised the requirement including the First Minister on the backdrop that women should not be subjected to such requirements to prove rape before they can get help towards the upbringing of their child. What do you think guys, is it a wrong policy or good intention gone bad?

MSP against Child Tax Credit Reform

Nicola Sturgeon and Ruth Davidson in the heat of argument.

MSPs have condemned changes to child tax credits and a controversial provision known as the “rape clause”.
UK government welfare reforms cut child tax credit and Universal Credit for third or subsequent children.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon led a Holyrood debate saying parliament should be “fundamentally opposed” to the two-child policy.
However, Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson defended the plans on grounds of financial responsibility.
The welfare changes, which were announced in 2015 and came into effect from 6 April, limit tax credits to the first two children in a family, with exceptions for adoptions, those involved in kinship care and for children born as a result of “non-consensual conception”.
The terms of the latter exemption have proved controversial, with protest rallies held in Glasgow and Edinburgh and fiery exchanges in the Holyrood chamber.
These continued in the Scottish government-led debate, which saw a series of impassioned speeches – including one where Kezia Dugdale silenced the chamber by reading out an email from a rape victim.

Ms Sturgeon’s motion for the debate read that parliament should be “fundamentally opposed to the UK government’s imposition of the two-child limit”, as it “will push families into poverty”.
It also “utterly condemns the disgraceful and repugnant ‘rape clause'”, saying the policy is “unfair, unequal, morally unacceptable and deeply harmful to women and their children and a fundamental violation of women’s human rights”.
