The UN was established to promote international cooperation and international order, but its members barely cooperate amongst themselves. Members can at will veto any resolution by the organisation when they deem fit it’s not in their interest. One of such examples is the case of Syria, where Russia has done everything possible to frustrate efforts of the international community. North Korea is perhaps the only Country that has made the UN Security Council to seat more than often than they want to, with emergency meetings every time the country carries out its nuclear test, the country has forced such meetings too many times that the UN’s emergency netting has become so ordinary. To be fair on the UN as an intergovernmental organisation, it has succeeded and indeed still succeeding in other aims it has set for it self such as fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict etc. But has it succeeded in maintaining international peace and security which is chief amongst its objectives, only time would now tell.
